Although Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain, gets the most attention when it comes to climbing in Tanzania, there are other peaks worth considering.
For instance, its sister mountain, Mount Meru, is well worth climbing.
4,566-metre-high Mount Meru, Africa’s fifth highest mountain, is a dormant stratovolcano in Arusha National Park, 70 kilometres west of Kilimanjaro.
Expect to see beautiful montane forests, craters in the rock and views of Kilimanjaro in the distance.
Climbing Mount Meru is also a great wildlife experience as you hike past wild animals.
We pick you up at the airport and will drive you to Arusha.
Here you will have diner and overnight in a lovely accommodation where we will organize a pre-trek briefing.
After breakfast, we drive through Arusha National Park to Momella Gate where we complete registration formalities.
We then begin our trek through the forest to the crater floor and then steeply to Miriakamba Hut.
During our trek, we are accompanied by an armed ranger as we walk among giraffes, warthogs and buffalo.
The trek is tough because of the steep slopes but in return you get spectacular views of Momella Lakes and Kilimanjaro.
We dine and spend the night at Miramba Huts. It consists of lodges, divided into several rooms.
After breakfast, we climb, through clearings and forests, to Mgongo wa Tembo (Elephant Ridge). We rest at a spot with great views of the crater and the main cliffs of the summit.
From here, we hike further through forested slopes and dry streams.
After a rest at Saddle Hut, the place where we spend the night, we explore Little Meru (3820m.h.). The summit offers fantastic views of the top of Meru, the snow-capped Kilimanajro and the Maasai villages below.
Around midnight, we leave Saddle Hut for the trek to the summit of Meru via Rhino Point. The walk to the summit is strenuous over a narrow ridge but is one of the most exciting treks in East Africa. We hike through rough vegetation, bare rock and ash to the top of this rugged mountain.
At the summit, we rest and look out over the surrounding landscapes.
We then return to Saddle Hut for a meal before continuing to Miriakamba Hut where we set up camp.
In the morning, we continue our descent down the mountain. We will again pass through forest areas and open grasslands where, with any luck, zebras and giraffes
We leave the park via Momella Gate where our car and driver await us.
They will take you to Arusha for a well-deserved dinner at a local restaurant.
Today you can relax or explore the city.
We bring you to the airport depending your departure time.
And if you don’t feel like going home yet, you can extend your trip with a nice safari or beach holiday.
We will make you a tailor-made trip proposal.
