7 Days Family Safari

Family Safari

A family safari in Tanzania can be an incredible experience that your whole family will treasure for a lifetime.

A family safari in Tanzania will be an incredible educational experience for the children. On our safaris they will learn about wildlife and nature.

For your family safari, we select lodges and camps that cater to families with children. Accommodations with family rooms, swimming pools and child-friendly activities.

And what could be more fun for the kids than spending the night in a tent in the heart of the bush!

The team of Luwai Safaris will help you plan your itinerary, arrange transportation, and provide guidance on family-friendly activities and accommodations.

DAY 1. KIA – Moshi

You will be picked up at the international airport (KIA) by our taxi driver with nameplate.

He will take you to your lodge in Moshi on the southern flank of Kilimanjaro.

Here you will stay at Honey Badger Lodge, a lush hidden oasis located in a rural community.  The swimming pool and lush spacious grounds offer guests a wonderful natural relaxing environment.  The restaurant serves delicious local dishes.

DAY 2. Moshi – Rau cycling tour

In the morning, your mountain bikes will be ready at the entrance of your hotel.

Together with our local guide, you will go on a bike ride through the Rau Forest Reserve and past the neighboring rice fields and villages.

In the Rau Forest Reserve, you will discover black-and-white colobus monkeys in the trees. Through beautiful trails, we then cycle to the lower rice fields and green sugarcane plantations. Here you can enjoy the beautiful landscapes, huge baobabs, and weather permitting, the view of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Since 2013, Rau Eco & Cultural Tourism Enterprise has been involved in local projects that aim to protect the Rau Forest Reserve and help the local community develop sustainable activities. The eco-friendly tours help empower women and youth of our community, raise awareness about environmental issues and mitigate climate change.

Dinner and overnight at Honey Badger Lodge

DAY 3.  Moshi – Materuni – Mount Kilimanjaro

After breakfast your guide will pick you up for a short drive with our 4×4 safari jeep towards the Materuni waterfalls & hotsprings.

First, we will visit the waterfalls. During a short walk, our guide will inform you about Chagga culture, village life and explain the surrounding fauna and flora. The waterfalls are breathtaking. The water plunges from 80 metres high into the small lake.

The hot springs of Kikuletwa, also known as Chemka Hot Springs, are close to Rundugai village and are one of the most beautiful places in Tanzania to relax. The small pond is surrounded by palm and fig trees with winding roots and the crystal-clear, turquoise water invites you to take a refreshing bath.

Here we will have a picknick before leaving this idyllic place for your next destination.

After a 1h30 drive on tarred roads, we arrive at Simba Lodge.

Simba Farm is a working farm and lodge located on 5000 hectares of rolling hills in West Kilimanjaro with breathtaking views of Mt Kilimanjaro, the Maasai steps and Mt Meru.

Here we have dinner, and we will overnight.

DAY 4. Simba Farm to Lake Natron

Early morning, we will drive you from Simba Lodge to Lake Natron.

During the 3hour drive we will pass different Maasai villages and you will spot some your first wildlife along the road.

Our next stop is Lake Natron, a salt or soda lake. It is located in the Gregory Trench, at the foot of Ol Doinyo Lengai, an active volcano. The lake is 57 kilometers long and 22 kilometers wide.

Every year, between September and April, more than two million flamingos fly into the area to lay their eggs and raise young.

Tens of thousands of other waterbirds can be spotted near the lake, making Lake Natron a top destination for birdwatchers in Africa.

We have lunch at Lake Natron Safari Lodge after which we visit the Great Rift Valley and the active volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai.

After our visit, we return to the lodge where you have dinner and overnight.

Lake Natron Lodge offers comfortable en-suite safari tents and features a swimming pool, restaurant and bar.

DAY 5 Lake Natron – Tarangeri National Park

Early morning, a Maasai guide will take you for a walk along the banks of the lake. In the dry season, you imagine yourself in a seemingly uninhabited, desert-like dream world. The Lake Flats around the waterfront contain small lakes, streams and hills that provide a variety of hospitable environments for birds that thrive here.

On the way, we stop for breakfast.

After the hike, we drive to Tarangeri National Park (3h30 on tarred roads) where we have lunch at the Main Gate.

After lunch we start our game drive. The park is home to one of Africa’s largest elephant populations, with several herds of up to 300 members per herd. There are also large numbers of impala, eland, buffalo, giraffe, Bohor reedbuck, Coke’s hartebeest, Thompson’s gazelle and the great and lesser kudu. Some black rhinos are also said to be present in this park.

We have dinner & stay overnight at the Tarangeri Safari Lodge.

Here you will sleep in typical safari tents, with thatched roofs and large mesh windows.

The perfect opportunity to connect with the sights and sounds of nature.

And while you rest, the kids can play in and by the pool.

Day 6 Tarangeri National Park

We will go on a game drive all day today. We traverse the park in search of predators, elephants and enjoy the park-like nature. On the way, we stop for a picnic lunch.

And after that intense introduction to Tanzanian nature, we return to our tented camp for a refreshing dip in the cool water of the pool.

At sunset, we once again drive into the park where the animals prepare for the night and the predators for the hunt.

We end the day at the lodge’s restaurant with a well-deserved dinner.

Day 7. Tarangeti National Park – Arusha – KIA

After breakfast, we drive through the park one last time on our way to Arusha.

Here we have lunch at a local restaurant and take time to explore the town. We visit the Maasai Craft Market with several small stalls under one roof, selling curios, wood carvings, beads, fabrics, table mats and others. Get ready to haggle!

Depending your itinerary, we will transfer you to the airport.

Optional: Zanzibar

If you want to enjoy a few more days of beach and sea, we can extend your holiday in Zanzibar.
